Our herd is managed in line with scientific evidence-based best practices, as we feel this gives our animals the best quality of life. Vaccines are administered as recommended and antibiotics are used sparingly when necessary in line with antimicrobial stewardship guidelines.
Nutrition is a vital part of our herd health program. All animals have access to good quality hay (we're reseeding our "Hay Meadow" currently), and free choice loose minerals and fresh water. The senior does and some kids have access to summer pastures and are secured by our Maremma, Albert. Grain is provided in varying amounts depending on life stage.
Parasite management
Our herd is small enough that we do routine fecal exams and only deworm animals that have a significant load. We have animals which have never needed a chemical dewormer - but if they have a bloom, they will get dewormed. All kids are also raised on coccidia prevention.
Health testing
Our herd is tested CAE negative (yearling and over). Spot tests for Johne's, CL and Brucellosis have been done, also negative.
DNA
All of our animals are G6S normal (N/N) by parentage or by testing.
